Position Overview
The Judicial Undergraduate Legal Intern offers a unique experiential learning opportunity with a New York State Court Judge and the Judge’s staff. The student may be asked to complete a research assignment and writing. The student will observe judicial proceedings and court operations. This internship offers students an exceptional occasion to develop legal skills and knowledge while in the courtroom and the Judge’s chambers with the Judge, attorneys, parties and witnesses.
Key Responsibilities
· Conduct Westlaw legal research on case law, statutes, and procedural rules
· Draft findings from legal research as assigned by the Judge
· Review court documents
· Observe court proceedings, hearings, trials, and conferences
· Assist with organizing case files and exhibits
· Maintain strict confidentiality of court matters and sensitive information
· Support court staff with administrative and clerical tasks as needed
Qualifications
· The student must be a junior or senior, Legal Studies major with a minimum of 3.3 GPA
· The student must have completed two legal research and writing classes and received a grade no less than B
· The student must be mature and responsible and understand the weekly commitment
· Professional demeanor and commitment to confidentiality and ethical standards
· Ability to work independently and manage assignments effectively
· Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation.
· Students must dress in business attire, and their appearance must be neat, clean and conform with the acceptance standards in the legal community
